Deciding between repairing or replacing your AC or furnace can be difficult. Use the following three signs to help you determine when it’s time to replace your equipment.

1. Age

The average air conditioner should serve your home for roughly 10 to 15 years and a standard gas furnace for 15 to 20 years when properly maintained. When both systems get older, the internal components begin declining and failing, driving up your repair and operating costs. If your system is older, consider replacing it instead of pouring more money into the system through repairs.

2. Repair Costs

Keep a close eye on your repair costs, both for individual costs and the cumulative costs year over year. There are two ways to evaluate whether your system is nearing replacement. First, evaluate any individual repair and the cost. If it’s more than 50% of the cost of a new system, it may be time for a replacement. Next, add up all the repairs over the last two years and multiply them by the age of the system. If that exceeds the cost of a new system, you may want to consider replacing the system.

3. Utility Costs

Keep an eye on your heating and cooling bills. Consistently seeing higher energy consumption each month compared to the prior year indicates a significant decrease in efficiency. The causes can range from small problems that you can have repaired to the system aging and needing replacing. Rely on a professional technician to help you evaluate your particular case and whether it’s time for a replacement.
